Sihanoukville takes the south-west monsoon straight off the Gulf of Thailand, so its wet season starts about two weeks earlier than inland and hits considerably harder — July to September can bring days of continuous rain rather than the afternoon showers typical of Phnom Penh. Seas are rough through this period and boats to Koh Rong are frequently cancelled. From November to April the wind reverses, the sea calms, and this becomes the peak season.
